Hurricane Eta

ETA

Newberry is in the path of Hurricane Eta, which is currently projected to pass over us tomorrow. In response to Hurricane Eta, the City has declared a local state of emergency. We are currently under a Tropical Storm Warning. Rainfall in this event is expected to be 1 to 1.5 inches with possible pockets of 2 to 3 inches. At this time, winds of 37 to 44 mph are expected at 8 a.m. Thursday morning. By noon they are expected to be 26 to 29 mph. Please secure your yard and bring in any items that could become projectiles. Prepare now! Bring inside any lawn furniture, outdoor decorations or ornaments, trash cans, hanging plants and anything else that can be picked up by the wind.

As it is available, new information will be posted in order to keep our neighbors, visitors and families up to date.

 

Shelter Information 

Currently, no shelters are expected to open. However, Alachua County Emergency Management makes this decision. Please call 311 for the latest information.

 

Mandatory Evacuations 

There are no mandatory evacuations locally. If you live in a manufactured home or low-lying area, please make sure you have a contingency plan to stay with someone or in a hotel.

 

City Government Offices 

Except for essential public safety services, City offices and facilities will be closed Thursday, Nov. 12. Public safety vehicles and responders will stay out unless wind speeds make responding too dangerous. The service will resume as soon as it is safe.

 

School Closings 

Alachua County public schools are closed Thursday. 

 

Trash Pickup

Trash collection for Thursday is delayed, with expected pickup on Friday.

Power outages, downed trees, and water issues in the city's service are may be reported online (www.ci.newberry.fl.us) or by calling 352-472-2161. All other emergencies should be reported to 911.

Sandbags and Flooding

The National Weather Service has issued tropical storm warnings and watches throughout north central Florida. It is expected to primarily be a wind event with sustained wind of 35 mph, and 2-4” of rain. Sustained rainfall and regional flooding is not expected at this time.
