The City of Newberry is proud to announce the promotion of Jason Lyman to the position of Fire Chief, where he will be responsible for the overall management and direction of the Newberry Fire Department, and Senior Lieutenant Kevin Farr to the role of Deputy Chief, where he will assist the Fire Chief in his duties and act as the Chief in his absence.
Chief Jason Lyman brings with him a distinguished career in public service, beginning with his time in the U.S. Coast Guard immediately after high school. His transition into fire service came in 1992 when he volunteered with Islamorada Fire Rescue—just a week before the devastating Hurricane Andrew struck. Over the years, Chief Lyman rose through the ranks, holding key positions such as Lieutenant, Shift Captain, Fire Inspector, and Chief of Operations. His leadership is rooted in professionalism, operational excellence, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
Chief Lyman’s extensive experience also includes disaster response deployments, emergency management training, and active involvement with several professional organizations, such as the Florida Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association and the Florida Fire Chiefs Association. Beyond his professional life, Chief Lyman is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying section-hiking the Appalachian and Florida Trails. He lives in the Newberry area with his wife of 23 years, Summer, and their two daughters, Josie and Taylor.
Deputy Chief Kevin Farr has been an integral part of the Newberry Fire Department since beginning his career as a part-time firefighter in October 1997. His dedication and service have enabled him to rise through the ranks to the role of Senior Lieutenant, before his promotion to Deputy Chief. A lifelong member of the Newberry community, Kevin’s fire service journey began while he volunteered with the City of Archer Volunteer Fire Department during his senior year of high school.
Deputy Chief Farr’s vision focuses on mentoring the next generation of fire service leaders, emphasizing both the mental and physical health of department personnel. Having witnessed tremendous growth in both the city and the department over nearly three decades, he is excited to guide the department through the even greater expansion that lies ahead. Deeply rooted in community service, Kevin is actively involved with youth agriculture programs and operates a family farm with his wife, Becky, and their two children, Lance and Madeline.
Interim City Manager Dallas Lee expressed great confidence in the new leadership team, stating, “Chief Lyman and Deputy Chief Farr embody the values, experience, and community spirit that are the foundation of Newberry’s Fire Department. Their commitment to excellent service and vision for the future will ensure the safety and well-being of our residents for years to come.”
The City of Newberry is honored to have such dedicated leaders at the helm and looks forward to the continued excellence and growth of the Newberry Fire Department under their guidance.
