The Code Enforcement Department helps promote and protect the quality of life within our community. We address citizens’ concerns related to issues that impact the environment, public health and safety, property values, and the general well-being of the City.
As of July 1, 2021, CS/SB 60 prohibits county and municipal code inspectors from initiating investigations into potential code violations based on anonymous complaints. A complainant must provide his or her name and address to the local government prior to the commencement of any investigation. (This prohibition does not apply when the inspector has reason to believe that the alleged violation presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, welfare, or could result in the imminent destruction of habitat or sensitive resources).
Upon receiving a complaint, Code Enforcement will investigate to determine if a violation is present. If a violation is confirmed, they will attempt to notify the property owner or responsible party. The owner will be provided with a designated timeframe to achieve voluntary compliance. Should the violation remain uncorrected after this period, Code Enforcement may issue a Notice of Violation and/or arrange a Special Magistrate hearing.
Here are some common violations Code Enforcement is tasked with addressing:
Accumulation of Junk
Commercial Business without acquiring a Business Tax
Hazardous Lands (Overgrown Lots) or Dangerous Structures
Improvement of Property prior to the Issuance of a Building Permit
Inoperable or Unlicensed Vehicles
Minimum Housing Requirements
