City of Newberry Celebrates Public Power Week, October 6-12

Community Power - Public Power Week 2019

The City of Newberry is celebrating Public Power Week, Oct. 6-12, along with more than 2,000 other community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities that collectively provide electricity to 49 million Americans.

“We are proud to be community powered,” said Newberry City Manager Mike New. “Public power puts the people of Newberry first, and Public Power Week gives us the chance to emphasize the advantages of locally grown, locally owned power to our citizens,” said New.

“Our service is reliable and safe, and we take pride in serving our friends and neighbors,” said New “The City of Newberry is proud to have served our community for almost 110 years.”

Today the City of Newberry Electric system has 5 field staff, including line workers and meter technicians, as well as several administrative support staff. The system includes over 30 miles of overhead and underground lines, over 1,500 utility poles, and 200 transformers. It serves 1,800 residential customers, and 400 commercial and industrial customers.

Public power’s distinct characteristics help Newberry’s utility customers’ lives become more powerful everyday while they are working, playing or enjoying the comforts of home. The City of Newberry is driven by public service, not profit. The City's electric system exists to serve our fellow citizens by saving them time and money, and by protecting their homes and environment so all community members can enjoy life with family and friends.
